American Chestnut

Back to Main Page

The Pacific Northwest is strangely a haven for the American Chestnut. Some of the largest remaining trees of this species can be found here. This native of the eastern North American was largely wiped out by the chestnut blight in the early 20th century and remains critically endangered in the wild. Thankfully, efforts to breed resistance to the blight from the Chinese Chestnut mean that resistant chesnuts are now being reintroduced into the wild. While this exciting work is underway, we are lucky to have some stunning examples of this tree.
